Sundays Off

Yesterday, an elderly, black gentleman popped into the store to pay on his account. He was hot and tired so he sat down while I printed his receipt. As he cooled off, I leaned across the counter to chat with him (i.e. ask lots of nosy questions). I learned that he works at Target, runs his own lawn business, and rents out his farm - all in the 25 years since retirement. He works his day job until 3:30 p.m. then cuts grass until 8:00 p.m. He works Saturdays and is off on Sundays - unless he needs "to catch up". He philosophized that when you stop moving, you die - a philosophy my husband shares, phrasing it exactly the same way. I agreed that few people nowadays know how to work that hard, admitting that, actually, I don't know how to work that hard. He said "Nope", slapped his hat on his head, and went to look for more furniture.

Did I mention he was 80?

  1. I absolutely loved this post. It reminded me of when I worked in retail and would start talking to the costumers I helped and became a little nosy. I loved how then you went into talking about staying busy and then how he didn’t know how to work very hard. The ending was by far the funniest part though. Thank you for all the great post. They are all extremely funny and I could and probably will spend hours reading more and more of them!

  2. Thank you, Matthew! So much! I'm glad I'm not alone in the "nosy" department. :)
