Salad, Pickles, Jalapenos, and Potatoes

I harvested the lettuce too late, but tried to eat it anyway. It was bitter. I added mandarin oranges, dried pomegranates, almonds, and sweetened, red wine vinaigrette, but....it was less better than grass. I tricked my father-in-law into partaking of my homemade weeds by pretending to enjoy them myself. (Living off the land is a lure to some, and they are easily cuckolded.)

Today, Kit asked me if planting a tomato plant and a jalapeno plant together would produce a spicy tomato. I called Luke, and he said, unequivocally, "No. They are not even of the same genus." I called Allen, and he said, "No. That's stupid."

Kit and Allen are pickling partners. Not that they pickle together in aprons and junk, but they both grow their own cucumbers, pickle them all summer, and compare notes. Actually, Allen compares notes with no one, but Kit is ever seeking the secrets of the brine. It pays off in that his are just the right sort to eat with sandwiches. But I would never say such a thing aloud. See how I never say it aloud?

No one can, however, disrespect Allen's way with a potato. He lovingly experimented with his recent harvest, creating the most sumptuous potatoes au gratin that ever was au gratined.
